Hey!
We are gearing up for our second project for ‘Ek se Anek’. The first project has been written and spoken about previously in which the project took birth from a single concept and different artists explored different mediums. With the project growing further and gathering a good interest from more artists we are now approaching our second project at Municipal Market. With our discussions stirring up arguments and debates each time, we have further articulated our thoughts.
We do not have a manifesto or a political statement to make by stepping out of the gallery space. Over the past couple of meetings we understood that we are a group of enthusiastic emerging artist/ designers / individuals who wish to share our ideas, thoughts and works with people. Some of us being designers who are constantly engulfed in development of spaces or voids, we believe that the city has a lot of unused spaces, corners, niches to offer that can be utilized and sometime challenge the notions of usages also and chose some public places in our city (last time Vastrapur and this time MN market, CG road).
We understand that in a gallery the work exhibits itself and expects a ‘viewer’ who understands the work. But when you place the art object in-between the everyday of people, what new meanings does this work then develop? The ‘viewer’ is now replaced by (many) people. We don’t assume that the public doesn’t know about art and now needs to be made aware of what art is. We position ourselves as professionals expecting a conversation from people.
The liberty to generate a conversation with the artist is by anybody who comes across the work in which a question very commonly asked is: What are you doing in my space?
We believe that when you step upon their doorstep it’s a thin line that maintains the dignity of our work meant for sharing as against that of selling our work.
With some many questions and a few answers we wound up our arguments with each other. We now look forward for more responses.
